Baby Boomers Take the Botox Plunge

- by Dr. Michael Bublik Los Angeles Facial Plastic Surgeon

Dr. Michael Bublik, a board certified physician in Facial Plastic Surgery and Ear, Nose, Throat Surgery in Glendale, California, notes that many of his patients are baby boomers. He emphasizes that not only 50-plus women are booking more appointments for cosmetic procedures, but men as well.

Dr. Bublik hears frequently from his patients that Corporate America is unfriendly to older workers. Not only are baby boomers finding it increasingly difficult to compete with the younger generation in the office, but once they lose their jobs, it’s tough to get a new position. Unemployed workers in their fifties are increasingly finding themselves stuck in limbo; on one hand, they're too young to retire, and they may also be too old to get re-hired. While studies show that older workers were less likely to lose their jobs during the recession, those who were laid off are facing far tougher conditions than their younger colleagues. Workers in their fifties are about 20% less likely than workers ages 25 to 34 to become re-employed, according to an Urban Institute study published recently.

Dr. Bublik is aware that appearance is an important element in making a good impression in the workplace and in social settings, and warns that people should not underestimate a first impression. He notes that according to 2011 research by Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, people assess your competence and trustworthiness in a quarter of a second (250 milliseconds)–based solely on how you look. Dr. Bublik emphasizes that appearance is extraordinarily powerful because it’s the first filter when meeting someone new, and that, whether we like it or not, we are being judged by our looks.
Oftentimes best results can be achieved by a combination of Botox and fillers. While Botox is used to diminish dynamic wrinkles (such as the horizontal wrinkles on the forehead), fillers, can plump thin lips and hollowed under-eyes; fill facial wrinkles, acne and post-surgery scars; and fill creases such as smile lines (nasolabial folds) and “marionette” lines (which run from the mouth to chin). Most of Dr. Bublik’s patients are not looking to radically change their appearance; on the contrary, they want something done that will look like nothing has been done or to give them a “refreshed” look.

Most of his patients want to appear more rested and youthful without drastic changes and without any down-time. The subtle improvement that dermal fillers and a light touch of Botox can provide, plus the ability to return to the office immediately, is appealing to baby boomers. Patients say they don’t want to look dramatically different and they don’t want to spend the time or the money for a facelift.
Looking better and making a positive first impression is within reach; why don’t you make an appointment for a consultation with Dr. Bublik and find out what he can do to achieve a better you?
